Portable air conditioners are the easiest route to true air conditioning.

They can be installed easily, simply plug into a 13 amp socket and they're ready for use immediately.

Portable air conditioning units work by taking heat from a room and expelling it to the outside. Air inside the room is then chilled and recirculated.

There are two types of portable machines, single units/monos and split systems.

Single / Mono units
These are instantly recognised by their exhaust hose which is used to expel the hot and damp air to the outside. Single units can cope with a wide range of standard room requirements.

Split Systems
For larger rooms that have greater heat loads split systems are normally required. They are easily recognised by the separate (condenser) box that needs to be placed outside the room.

Room Sizing
Room sizes are an approximate guide.
They are calculated on the basis of 40 watts needed to cool 1 cubic metre (4 BTU/H per cubic foot).
However, when determining the model best suited for your room remember that each room has its own characteristics, so heat gain should be considered too. South and west facing windows, more than two people in a room and office equipment will add more heat to a room so a more powerful air conditioner will be required.
